My name is Allan Adler. I have a PhD in mathematics from SUNY Stony 
Brook, 1974. I am active in my mathematical research and several
of my recent research papers have appeared in print this year.
I am currently living in a godforsaken hole in Rhode Island named
Kingston.

I am committed to my research and at the same time quite alienated from
the traditional methods of earning a living as a mathematician. As a
result I am doing my research without having an income, while living
on loans and handouts.

It seems to cost about $6000 to pay for my food and rent each year and
in order to be less of a burden to those who are helping me survive I
am thinking of ways I can earn that much without interfering with my
research. There are various ways one can try to do that but after some
thought, I believe that what I would feel most comfortable with would
be the following: 

(1) I would work for one month each year provided I could earn 
    enough in that month to cover my annual costs for food and shelter.
    The rest of the year I would forget about it.
(2) I want to rely on skills I already have, which include writing skills,
    the ability to explain mathematics to people who want to understand
    it and some experience playing with computer algebra package.

In keeping with (1) and (2), I will avoid metawork such as:

(a) spending a lot of effort looking for a job.
(b) spending a lot of time and effort retraining myself.

There is one exception to (2) and (b), which is that I never refuse to
let someone teach me something interesting. If I happen to learn some
additional skills in the process, that is ok with me as long as I don't
start to feel like I am working.

I am still exploring this idea and I am open to constructive suggestions
on how to achieve my goal.

is accompanied by a short autobiographical note. The article itself
describes a method I discovered  for making magic cubes using
the Riemann zeta function. This is not my main research activity but
I am not at all sorry I did it. Other articles of mine can be obtained
