Brief note to say that it is a pure joy to be back in Mongolia. I am
here
primarily to be the race day director for the first ever Mongolian
Ultramarathon which will be held just under the Siberian border at Lake

Hovsgol.

Those of you that remember my last trip to Mongolia remember that I was

given the title of Mongolian Princess [kb. 100 kilo a holgy..] and all
of the land I could see from
that spot by Yang Kai [egy kinai srac, volt kollegam] Khan, a decendent
of Ghengis Khan [:))], and so already
have a strong tie to this place.  It is definitely heart-land for me;
horses, open country, strong and friendly people.

In the first 24 hours I have already had a number of rich experiences.
 They include:

- forgetting my visa photo and so showing up with Nicolas in UB at
customs
with only one of the two needed in hand, and it being of someone else.
They insisted on two, had a number of technical difficulties (dead
batteries in the Polariod), glued the one photo of some other woman on
my
visa application, and merrily said "welcome to mongolia" while pointing
out
the door.
-being told by a lovely Mongolian woman that Americans and Mongolians
have
a lot in common because we are both simple, and agreeing with her.
-attending the marathon press conference, with about 15 reporters and
some
TV crews, and having the best question asked be what plan we had for
participants that are attached by wild animals. It seems that the last
10K
that was held at Hovsgol resulted in some casualties, which is why
there
haven't been races run there since.
-attended the conference with one of our sponsors, a German man with a
pony
tail and RayBans from Chenggis (Ghenghis in Mongolian-English) Beer,
who
told about coming to UB to set up a casino, only to have the license
given
to the Macau mafia. He has been key in sending at least three
goverment
officials to jail.
-having dinner at an African restaurant, run by a Camaroon woman,
living in
Mongolia
-dancing until 2 am at a Mongolian disco with crazy
birthday-celebrating
Mongolian women who kept shouting "I love you" and "Squeeze me" at me
 ...
mostly because it was the extent of their English rather than it having
any
intent. I danced for hours, until I couldn't anymore, and thoroughly
enjoyed myself.
-accidentaly meeting a freind from Shanghai who has just returned from
a
dinasour bone hunting expedition with a paleontologist (sp???) in the
Gobi,
who had made a number of finds. I heard a few weeks ago that the
hottest
black market item in Asia now is dinasour eggs from Mongolia and
northern
China.
-had a spontaneous breakfast with a "peace keeping" specialist from the
US
military intelligence service. He is here helping the Mongolian
military
decide with limited resources, how to make a role for themselves in the

world. Invited me to the US Embassy July 4th party today.
-Met Dr. Mike, who is a German doctor that will be managing all of the
Mongolian doctors at the race aid stations. He is a real character.
He
lived for six years in Nepal before moving to Mongolia. He has great
stories about rescues in the Himalayas, and about having his helicopter

diverted when flying out for emergency calls in the Mongolian steppes
for
wolf chasing, actually hunting by helicopter when a random wolf is
spotted,
which the Mongolian pilots can't resist.

All of this in the first day. Lots more adventure to be had in the
next
two weeks.

In case of emergency I can be reached:

[az erdekesebbeket nem torolnem:]

>From July 4-14th, I can be reached by satellite phone (very expensive) in
the Toilogt camp:
Telephone No: xxxx

>From July 14th to the 17th, I will be trekking, thus not reachable. In case
of dire urgency, a horseman can be sent from Toilogt camp to look for
me
and bring me a message.
