10. RESULTS FROM THE 5TH WORLD LINDY HOP CHAMPIONSHIP
As you may know already from our statement we couldn't start for Germany at
the World Lindy Hop Championship We got offers from six different
countries to start for them. We chose Finland; because we have friends there
we know for a long time and were able start together with some other couples
in a team. Even with all these problems before we had a good time in
Germany. The organizers did a great job to make the competition to a very
enjoyable event.
The preliminaries took place on Friday and the finals on Saturday. Friday
night was combined with a swing dance event. We had great music played by
the Swing band "The Odeon Dance Orchestra" and DJ Stephan and a very nice
wooden dance floor.
The judges did a very good job, too. It was the task that the couples had to
dance improvised in all the preliminaries. Only in the fast final you had to
bring your own music and dance a choreographed routine. Many couples still
danced routines in the preliminaries, except the American couples and we for
sure. The judges realized that and made their judgement according to the
rules. So a lot of couples that took the risk dancing routines didn't reach
the finals.
Seven couples qualified directly into the semi-finals. All the German
couples except Eva & Walter had to go through the hope round to reach the
semi-finals. We were leading all the preliminaries as the best couple
(Maggie & Kevin followed us on 2nd place all the time). In the final
unfortunately I (Baerbl) made a very big mistake. In the last five seconds
of the fast final I forgot the choreography. We still got 1st, 2nd and 3rd
placements from all the judges. We would have made at least 2nd, maybe even
1st place without this big mistake. But this can happen.
The finals took part in the winter domicile of Circus Krone. It was a sold
out event with more than 2000 paying spectators and TV-recording. The
audience loved the Lindy Hop couples very much and showed them their
enthusiasm with big applause. It was held together with the Rock 'n' Roll
World Masters. The floor there was ok but not as good as the night before.
It was too cushioned. Because the Rock 'n' Roll World Masters was the bigger
competition, the floor was made fitting better for the Rock 'n' Roll
couples, which do the scary aerials. But all the couples still did well. We
had to dance an improvised slow round first and then a choreographed fast
round, both with open judgement. Kevin & Maggie did a very good job and won
the WC. Everybody of the finalist were named for the awards and got a
certificate and flowers, the first three couples got also a big bottle of
champagne and a nice trophy which will always remind them on their
placements and the winner received the title "Lindy Hop World Champion". It
was a really nice event!

11. THE 6TH WORLD LINDY HOP CHAMPIONSHIP 2001 WILL BE IN THE USA
The next World Lindy Hop Championship will be held in San Francisco. The
unofficial date is the 1st/2nd of December 2001. The date still may change,
but it will be somewhere around this time. We heard that the organizers have
great plans.
