Mainland cracking down on Taiwan-based Buddhist group
HONG KONG, May 4 (AFP) -
China was expanding its crackdown on traditional Chinese spiritual groups to
a Taiwan-based Buddhist group and Christian-influenced spiritual groups, a
Hong Kong rights group said Thursday.

Since last October China's public security bureaus began a crackdown on 14
Christian groups and the Taiwan-based Guanyin Famen, or Guanyin Method, a
Buddhist influenced philanthropic organization, the Information Center for
Human Rights and Democracy said.

The Chinese government have labelled the groups "evil sects," thus opening
the way for a police crackdown on the groups, the center said.

During a 3,000 member meeting of the Guanyin Method in Hong Kong on May 2,
several hundred members from the mainland confirmed the ongoing crackdown,
the center said.

The Guanyin Method began to spread in the mainland in 1992 and now boasts
some 500,000 followers in 20 Chinese provinces, it said.

The group's guru, Supreme Master Ching Hai teaches methods to seek
self-enlightenment, but has been banned in China as a sect because her
teachings are counter to communism, while followers worship the guru, the
center said.

The Chinese government last year began a widescale crackdown on the
Buddhist-inspired Falungong spiritual group, after labelling the group the
biggest threat to political stability since the 1989 Tiananmen protests.

The group, which preaches clean living and high moral values and practices
group meditation and breathing exercies, has been accused of being an
"illegal organization" and an "evil sect.

Also banned was the Zhong Gong group, a group similar to Falungong, which
has registered with the Chinese government as a "Qi gong" group, or a group
which practices traditional Chinese martial arts and meditation.

On Wednesday, the Jianghuai Morning Daily, in central Anhui province
reported a police crackdown on the Quanfanwei (Full Circle) Church, an
unregistered Christian group which meets in "home" or underground churches.

Six of the "backbone" leaders of the Quanfanwei (Full Circle) Church face
criminal charges for organizing an "illegal sect" and "illegal gatherings,"
while eight others face administrative imprisonment and 22 will get "public
order punishment," the paper said without elaborating.

Prior to outlawing the Falungong and Zhong Gong groups, the Chinese
government routinely cracked down on Protestant and Catholic-inpsired home
churches, which flourished during the 1980s, and frequently jailed the
leaders of the churches.
