FRANCE SEES HUNGARY AMONG FIRST TO JOIN EU. Visiting French
European Affairs Minister Pierre Moscovici on 17 January said
in Budapest that he has "no doubt whatsoever that Hungary
will be admitted to the EU as the first country, or will be
among the first group of those admitted." Both Moscovici and
Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi agreed that
Budapest's planned date of accession of 1 January 2003 can
serve as a goal. Moscovici noted, however, that Hungary still
needs to carry out reforms in environmental protection,
transport, justice, internal security, and agriculture. MSZ
