Come on this is too much!
I don't know what St. Istvan wanted at the end of the 10th century
(and frankly I doubt about the "liberal views" of any 10th century
ruler), the way the Hungarian authorities trated the Romanians in
Transylvania for centuries is in no way an example of friendly conduct.
And if you are in any doubt, let me tell you that two of my grand-
grand-parents left Transylvania in 1907-1909 because of the "good"
treatment of the Hungarian authorities (notice that I'm not saying the
Hungarians). In both cases they left almost everything (they were not
exactly rich but they had a house, some land, a lot of sheep). One of
them was living in Covasna (in a area with Hungarian majority then and
now) the other in Fagaras (in and area with Romanian majority then
and now).

Trying to put history "work" for you doesn't realy help!

However, I do agree that what happened in the past (even if it is
a recent past) should not damage the chances for the future and I
strongly agree that Transylvania's history is both Romanian and
Hungarian (I would add German also) and there is place for a better
treatment of Hungarians by the Romanian authorities today. There is
also place for a better treatment of Romanians (by the Romanian
authorities) today!

Regards,
Mihnea.

Dear Karl,

it won't help much but I have a story for you. I got a free lift from a taxi
driver on the highway in Hungary. Since he was a professional and I was
somewhat interested we were talking about cars and safety on the roads. I
asked him how one can manage a better car not to get stolen in Hungary.
(better means better than a Lada) He said: It is easy. Either you have a good
friend working in a gas station and you park your car there under a strong
streetlight or you put a dangerous snake in it.

I hope it helps:)

I drove my own car from Britain to Hungary last summer. My insurance company
did not bat an eyelid when I asked for insurance to cover it - for them, EU
and eastern European insurance policies are standard products.
Is it true that all major rental companies would not insure their cars for
Hungary? If so, maybe you should buy a cheap car and insure it personally.
Where will you be entering Europe?
I find it hard to believe that some company won't want to take advantage of
travellers to Hungary. Good luck, whatever happens.

Hungary is not unique in its racist attitudes towards the Gypsies. In
1991, I had a brief audience with Demszky Gabor in his mayoral office and
suggested that it might be a beneficial idea to determine how many Gypsies
live in Budapest and then to develop some programs to make them part of
the Budapest community. He expressed absolutely no interest in the Gypsies
and suggested that they could do things for themselves. It was interesting
that this man whom I had admired for his samizdat activities expressed a
them/us attitude, but this was mild compared to the many vicious comments
I received from many Hungarian about Gypsies.

I don't see what the problem is about joining the European Community since
racist attitudes against Gypsies prevail throughout Europe, from skinhead
murders in the Czech Republic to Gypsy village burnings in Romania by both
Romanians and Hungarians

The "fekete vonat" is the Hungarian equivalent of the South African Soweto
townshit trains that would bring the blacks into the white cities for
work, then return them back to their shacks.

Hi,

Which mutation of the virus are You referring to? There is one mutation
that attacks the tongue, thus forcing the infected person to
pronunce "stewardess" as "steward-person", or "waitress" as "waiter-person",
or -- God forbid! -- dehumanize Jesus to have a neutral sex.

Fortunately, this mutation of the PC virus is not a well-known strain
in Hungary, but don't take my word for it, since I've been living in the
US for 3 years now and things may have changed. I think, people who
are infected on their tongue would generally be called "clowns" in
Hungary anyway, due to their hilariously funny pronunciation of some
common Hungarian words, some of which are neutral, anyway.

The more serious strain of the virus may be the one that You mentioned,
which attacks the brain-cells. When I first came to the US, I found
those people who were infected by this virus very funny. Then I
realized that it is a serious cultural problem, not just individual
cases, which made the problem appear very serious.

At the time I left for the US, I didn't even hear about PC in Hungary,
or met somebody who was infected. Hmm, Hungary may be the last safe
haven for us, healthy ones! :-))))

You are not right here, Wally. The name 'fekete vonat' comes
from a Hungarian 'Schlager' and not after the colour of the tra-
vellers.

Ajaj, fekete vonat
elvitted a páromat / you took away my dear

By the way, I travelled on that train several times,
and it is true that plenty of Gipsies travel weekly
also on board but there are lot of Hungarian as
well.
You know, our east county, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg
is one of (if not) the poorest in Hungary. There is
no considerable industry, the soils are explicitly bad
on Hungarian scale, so the folks there have to find
jobs on other parts of Hungary, mostly in Budapest.
(As my mother, her sisters and brothers did that.)
