I'm glad that Hungary will be joining the European Union in the near
future.  It's too bad that Hungary's neighbours weren't invited to join.
Although I understand why they (Romania, Slovakia, Serbia) wern't asked, I
also think it may be bad news for the Hungarian minority communities in
those countries.  Why?  Well, if Hungary prospers in the EU, and there are
some spin-off benefits for the ethnic Hungarians in the neighbouring
countries, ethnic jealousies may flare.  The Hungarian minorities may be
looked on unfavourably as having "rich" cousins across the border and not
deserving of any minority rights.

The decisions by NATO and the EU as to who's in and who's out is a sure way
to perpetuate the divisions in Eastern Europe.

A couple of days ago, in the local paper, there were two pictures of
anti-NATO demonstrators in Budapest.  The demonstrations were organized by
the Munkaspart.  One of the photos showed an elderly man with a "No NATO"
sign.  The other photo showed a large number of young demonstrators.  The
only reason I mention this is because a while ago, on this list, someone
said that all the members of the Munkaspart were senior citizens.  That
photo would seem to indicate that the Party has young members/supporters
and that they can be organized.

Do you think Romania has a good chance of joining the EU?  I don't.  If
I'm not mistaken, last year, MacDonalds closed their only outlet in
Bucuresti because they weren't making money.  It seems the roads are
so bad that people have trouble getting around the city and even if some
wanted to go to MacDonalds they'd have to be very determined.

Now, I've not been to Romania, or Bucuresti, but if Macdonalds, with all
it's resources can't make a go of it, who will?

And, do you really think that the government of Hungary is going to
encourage immigration for the ethnic Hungarians living in the neighbouring
countries?  I don't think Hungary has the resources to handle an influx of
immigrants.  And Hungarian prosperity may not change that attitude.

there are many oral traditional tales re the mgyr original "pagan"
nature worship religion... if anyone knows some of them, please post them to
this thread... only ones i know are about "truth" and "deceit" walking down a
country road and wagering about mortal behaviour etc... they are lovely and
fascinating because they have an inherent christianity context (pre 1000 AD)
good stuff... any more info on this is appreciated...

As long as there is a good chance to join (e.g. Romania) one can expect
continued "good behavior". What a prosperous (relatovely) Hungary will do

I think NATO membership may well come first. As far as immigration is
concerned, no, I don't expect the Hungarian government to encourage it, but
it happens. Since WWII there has been substantial migration from
Carpatho-Ukraine and Serbia (Vajdasag). Especially from communities near the
border. These were economically- motivated (as a rule). There has been some
from Romania as well. Poor as Hungary seems from the USA, all things are
relative.

Germany has encouraged ethnic Germans to immigrate. As a result the German
(Saxon) minority in Romania is less than half of what it was a generation
